Fluorides constitute an effective protection against caries. They form a protective layer around the teeth and are deposited in the enamel crystals. The use of fluorides in dental care can reduce the risk of tooth decay by up to 60%.
In order to prevent tooth decay even in young children, it is recommended that age-appropriate fluoride-containing toothpaste be used.
On the other hand, the use of fluoride tablets is no longer recommended these days, since the long-term consequences of systemic fluoride administration (e.g. in the skeleton) cannot be ruled out.
Fluorite crystal: the fluorides used in dentistry are produced from this crystal.
